Three Looks with Trajal Harrell: Lives of Performers (15*)
Trajal Harrell trained with dancer and choreographer Yvonne Rainer, a founding member of the legendary Judson Dance Theater. His own work as choreographer – particularly his seminal series Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church – connects with the history of that period but moves beyond its aesthetics.
Lives of Performers is Rainer’s first feature-length film and a brilliant extension and transposition of her postmodern practice into the realm of cinematic art.
A synopsis is tricky, but broadly it depicts the on- and off-stage lives of a group of performers and their choreographer/director. The approach, though, is highly unorthodox – eschewing narrative convention, blurring fiction and non-fiction, performance and rehearsal. As Rainer herself puts it: ‘although a very loaded set of circumstances begins to emerge … you cannot follow the story.’
